Jawad will stay in Cleveland afterall

Cleveland’s own Jawad Williams has finally decided to accept the Cavs contract offer, and will apparently be signing it this week.  This much according to the Plain Dealer’s Brian Windhorst who tweeted the following last night:

“Jawad Williams has decided to accept Cavs 1-year ($1.02M) qualifying offer and will sign it this week, agent Kevin Bradbury tells PD.”

This after a summer in which reports indicated that he was hearing recruiting pitches from ex-teammates in Miami to come join the Heat, and an ex-general manager in San Antonio to come join the Spurs.  At the end of the day Jawad stays home though, and will be the front-runner heading into camp for the starting SF spot in a competition with Jamario Moon and Joey Graham.

Through 64 NBA games over the last two seasons Williams has made his biggest impact on the defensive end of the floor as a stopper of sorts, although nobody’s mistaking him for a young Ron Artest.  He has been relatively balanced offensively shooting the three decently (32 of 99 from 3-point range) and also scoring inside some.

His numbers read 3.7 points per game, 1.3 rebounds and 0.5 assists over a 11.9 minutes per game average.  If he plays 36 minutes per game next season those same numbers could end up translating to around 11, 4 and 1.5 possibly.  I suppose if he did at least that or better, coupled with solid to good defense on a consistent basis, we’d take it.

I do wonder though, why he didn’t jump all over the opportunity to start here earlier and sign a couple months ago. The skeptic in me thinks that maybe he didn’t think his game would translate over the course of an 82 – game season playing 30 plus minutes a night, and maybe he thought we’d be seeing a heavy dose of Moon and Graham by the All Star Break.

It’s probably more like he was just doing what every other pro athlete in the world would do actually, in waiting it out for the best offer. So it seems it was Cleveland to come with that, and here’s hoping for big things this year from Jawad.

Wine and Gold Scrimmage is a week from Friday in Akron.
