Over last six seasons, no teams to finish with worst record in NBA ended up winning the draft lottery

I agreed with all points Craig made yesterday over at WFNY when talking about this rooting for the Cavs to lose thing, along with his take on the uncatchy acronym that’s been coined as the rallying cry for such efforts.  The only thing I’d like to also point out to those involved with the grassroots efforts of APPBITH, as championed by Kenny Roda, is the fact stated in the title above.

Over the last six seasons, no teams to finish with the worst record in the NBA ended up winning the draft lottery.  Henceforth known more simply by the acronym: OLSSNTTFWWRINEUWTDL

The last six teams to finish with the worst regular season record in the NBA were the New Jersey Nets, Sacramento Kings, Miami Heat, Memphis Grizzlies, Portland Trailblazers, and Atlanta Hawks.  In those subsequent drafts, each of these worst record teams ended up picking 3rd, 4th, 2nd, 4th, 4th, 2nd.  Nobody picked first.

The teams who did pick first in each of those respective drafts were the Wizards, Clippers, Bulls, Trailblazers, Raptors and Bucks.  The Wizards finished with the 5th worst record in the league on their way to winning the draft lottery that season, Clippers 3rd worst, Bulls 9th worst, Blazers 7th worst, Raptors 5th worst, and Bucks 6th worst.

Over the last six seasons then, the team with the worst record in the regular season ended up with an average draft lottery position of 3.16.  The team who ended up winning the lottery finished with the 5th (5.83) worst record that season on average.

My point here is simple.  We are in a no-lose situation here as Cavs fans and we are trying to make things more difficult for ourselves.  If Baron Davis can lead these guys to a win tonight against the Chicago Bulls and help build any type of momentum heading into next season great.  If they lose, that’s great too.  We rooted for wins this season only to lose in historic proportions.  Now we’ve won back-to-back and we’re mad we didn’t lose.

Just relax, enjoy the rest of the season, and wherever the Cavs end up finishing in the L-column, root for them to win the lottery.  The Bulls won 33 games and ended up with Derrick Rose.  We will have as good a chance as anybody else if we end up with one or two more wins than the T-Wolves.
