The Cavaliers named Wes Wilcox the General Manager of their D-League franchise in Canton on Thursday. They still haven’t named a name yet though, but we’ll get to that in a minute. First on the promotion of Wilcox, from Scott over at WFNY:
Joining the Cavaliers during the 2003-04 season, Wilcox has served as the team’s advance scout, pro and college scout before being promoted one year ago to his current role as director of pro player personnel. Over the past four seasons, Wilcox had also served as the team’s liaison with their respective Development League affiliates making this promotion a very seamless transition.
“I am extremely thankful for this unique opportunity to have a leadership role in building a special franchise in the city of Canton,” said Wilcox in the team’s press release. “Our organization places a very high value on player development as part of our culture and we are committed to building a successful environment both on the court and in this community. I’m excited to be a part of that and we look forward to earning the support of our fans here.”As far as the nickname goes for the Canton Developmental League team that Wes will be generally managing, he’s open to suggestions. If you don’t have time to drive down to Canton and drop yours into the fishbowl set up at the front desk, you still can help too. If you click here, you can fill out some information and take one big step towards naming your first NBA franchise. Something you can absolutely put on your resume in addition to bragging to your friends about.
I’m still in the brainstorming process right now, but I do plan to offer my two cents on the subject at some point. I heard somebody suggest the one I’m kinda partial to at the moment, and apologize that I don’t know who said it first, but I think I like the Bulldogs right now. I know that Canton McKinley High is also the Bulldogs, but that’s why I think I like it. It sort of ties the professional team to the community in some ways, Eric Snow went there who also played for the Cavs, it’s got a good ring to it, but there’s still a lot of different other ways to go with this to be sure.
I suppose the Canton Presidents could work – after William McKinley who practiced law in Canton during the late 1860’s, the Canton Hall of Famers for obvious reasons, the Canton Hoovers – after the vaccum cleaner company which was a major part of the area for over 50 years, or maybe even the Canton Dierdorfs. After Dan Dierdorf, Canton native. Or maybe I need to continue the thought process and come up with something else. That’s all I got for now though.
As a heads up, there’s a couple of projects I’m working on at the moment, so stay tuned if you don’t mind.
