Draft Day: Excitement, Mystery and Hope

Whether it’s cheers for Kyrie Irving or the collective grown for selecting DeSagana Diop, the NBA Draft is an exciting day. Especially for Cleveland fans, who’ve seen their team pile up a ton of losses in anticipation of a pick like the one the Cavaliers hold today at number four overall. It’s the time where we can sit back and look forward to the new year, with a new hope.

The Draft always carries a sense of mystery as well. Even if it is not with our favorite teams, there is still nothing like a team making a blockbuster trade that completely shakes up the draft spectrum. Draft nights are always must-see TV for me. Either the NFL or NBA, it’s always something I make sure I don’t miss (sorry MLB, you don’t do it for me). I still remember vividly my favorite draft moments, from drafting LeBron James, to the Browns, at the time, making the move for our new franchise QB Brady Quinn.

It is always a night my phone goes nuts from text messages and Twitter updates. There are always new expectations. That is the on thing I am most excited about for this Cavs team. Last season, I knew we still needed to land in the Lottery because we still needed another piece. Irving and Tristan Thompson are a solid foundation. We know what we have in Irving; future All-Star and one of the elite point guards in the League for years. Thompson is still a work in progress, but I can’t wait to see that progress unfold.

Whoever the Cavs add in the first round is going to help this team out, there is no doubt about that. But aside from the Hornets selecting Anthony Davis, it is pretty much up in the air after that. Will the rumor come to fruition and Cleveland deal for Charlotte’s second pick? Or do they stand pat at four and see who falls to them? What about if Golden State comes calling for Anderson Varejao and dangles that seventh pick to Cleveland with one of their top four or five guys are still out there?

If Dan Gilbert and Chris Grant are anything, it’s creative. This could be the night that begins a playoff push, if Grant and Co. get this draft correct. I think this team could be ready for that. There will come a day when we won’t have to look forward to these nights. I wait for the days when we are picking in the upper 20s after a deep playoff run. Those days will come too, especially if this one goes the way we’re all hoping it could.
